Pharmacological Effects and Mechanism of Action
- The active part of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) is its seeds and essential oil. Fennel seeds are rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C and contain significant amounts of calcium, magnesium, and iron. Fennel fruit and essential oil contain anethole, which reduces or prevents gastrointestinal spasms and enhances the secretion of digestive enzymes, thereby improving digestion. These actions help alleviate indigestion and related sleep disturbances caused by digestive dysfunction.
- Pimpinella anisum (anise) seeds, essential oil, and occasionally its leaves and roots are used. Anise fruit contains volatile oils, flavonoids, steroid compounds, and salts, contributing to its pharmacological properties. Historically, anise has been used for its carminative, analgesic, cold-symptom relief, and mouth-freshening properties.
- Carum carvi (caraway) seeds and essential oil are used. Caraway seeds contain compounds such as dihydrocarvone, carvone, thymol, and flavonoids, which provide antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting prostaglandin biosynthesis or preventing calcium influx. Caraway also possesses antimicrobial properties.
