Pharmacological Effects and Mechanism of Action
The medicinal parts of valerian are its roots and rhizomes. Valerian exhibits:
- Sedative
- Hypnotic
- Anxiolytic
- Antidepressant
- Anticonvulsant
- Antispasmodic properties
Human studies confirm the sedative effects of valerian, demonstrating its ability to:
- Reduce sleep onset time
- Improve irregular sleep patterns
- Minimize night awakenings
- Enhance overall sleep quality
Hops flowers demonstrate sedative effects in animal studies. Their calming effects are attributed to alpha-bitter acids, beta-bitter acids, and the presence of volatile oils. Post-oral administration, lupulone may be converted to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, contributing to sedative effects. Additionally, residual isovaleric acids in hops may play a role in these properties.
