Pharmacological Effects and Mechanism of Action
In traditional medicine, psyllium has been used as a laxative and for its anti-inflammatory effects on the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. The therapeutic effect of psyllium is due to the water-absorbing properties of the husk, which forms a substantial amount of mucilage. This increases the bulk and softens the stool, facilitating smooth and natural bowel movements. Additionally, the compounds in the husk of this plant play a significant role in cholesterol reduction.
