Pharmacology and Mechanism of Action

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, forming about one-third of all body proteins. It is a primary component of connective tissues, such as skin, and comprises 80% of the skin’s structure, providing strength and firmness. Alongside elastin, collagen maintains skin elasticity and helps it retain its structure. Collagen production declines with age and factors such as smoking and sun exposure, leading to reduced structural integrity and the appearance of wrinkles. Collagen, combined with vitamin C, helps support skin, cartilage, and joint health. Hydrolyzed collagen is composed of low molecular weight peptides (3-6 kDa) rich in amino acids like glycine, L-proline, and L-hydroxyproline, which support new collagen production in the body. When hydrolyzed, collagen is broken down into smaller, absorbable particles. Recent studies indicate that marine-sourced collagen has desirable properties. Oral hydrolyzed collagen supplements penetrate deeper skin layers, enhancing skin physiology and appearance, increasing hydration, elasticity, and firmness, reducing wrinkles, and rejuvenating the skin.
