Pharmacological Effects and Mechanism of Action

  • Calendula: Research has shown that rutin inhibits the release of histamine and serotonin, reducing vascular permeability. These mediators are released during inflammation from platelets, mast cells, and basophils, leading to increased vessel permeability. The flavonoids in Calendula contribute to anti-inflammatory effects by impacting arachidonic acid metabolism. Quercetin and rutin inhibit lipid peroxidation in a non-enzymatic manner. Additionally, aglycones of flavonoids inhibit prostaglandin synthesis through the cyclooxygenase pathway, reducing inflammation.
  • St. John’s Wort (Hypericum Perforatum): This herb has anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and permeability-modulating effects due to its flavonoid content.
  • Arnica: The active ingredients in Arnica, sesquiterpene lactones, provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
  • Peppermint: Menthol in peppermint oil has well-established topical analgesic and irritant effects. When applied to the skin, menthol stimulates cold receptors while suppressing pain receptors. It also reduces muscle spasms caused by serotonin.
