Supplements, along with their therapeutic benefits, may cause some unwanted side effects. Although not everyone experiences these, consult a physician or pharmacist if you experience any. Side effects may include gastrointestinal irritation, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea.
Vitamin A: Taking retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) concurrently with vitamin A supplements can increase the risk of vitamin A toxicity.
Vitamin D: Drug interactions have been reported with concurrent use of aluminum-containing antacids, barbiturates, etidronate, cholestyramine, thiazide diuretics, and corticosteroids.
Vitamin D: A fat-soluble vitamin that naturally occurs in very few foods. Brief exposure to sunlight is the most effective way to obtain vitamin D. Its primary function is to regulate serum calcium and phosphorus levels. Vitamin D enhances intestinal absorption of calcium. Without adequate vitamin D, only 10-15% of calcium and 60% of phosphorus are absorbed. In the presence of vitamin D, calcium absorption increases to 30-40%, and phosphorus absorption to 80%. Some evidence suggests that vitamin D supplementation in infancy may reduce the risk of developing type 1 diabetes later in life.
Vitamin A: A fat-soluble vitamin essential for vision, bone growth, and development.
