Interactions

Anticoagulants and Antiplatelet Drugs: Theoretical increased risk of bleeding; monitor accordingly.

Sildenafil: May theoretically cause hypotension when used together, although no human cases have been reported.

Pharmacology and Mechanism of Action

L-arginine is an amino acid essential for protein synthesis and is well-known for its vascular effects. It is converted into nitric oxide (NO) within blood vessel walls, which promotes vasodilation and may help reduce blood pressure. L-arginine can improve endothelial function, decrease monocyte/endothelial cell adhesion in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) or hypercholesterolemia, and enhance coronary blood flow. In athletes, L-arginine increases oxygen delivery, reduces lactate and ammonia production during exercise, and decreases oxidative stress, contributing to improved athletic performance. Nitric oxide also relaxes the smooth muscles of the genitourinary tract, supporting erectile function. L-arginine can stimulate the release of growth hormone, prolactin, glucagon, and insulin.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Short-term use of L-arginine in recommended doses is likely safe; however, due to limited studies, use in pregnancy and lactation is not advised.
